Tips on Sleeping in the Airport During an Overnight Layover

by Sharon @ Me Want Travel

Headed to Hong Kong, I noticed last minute that I purchased a flight containing an overnight layover in Beijing. I didn’t really want to venture outside of the airport to explore the city, and I heard it wasn’t abnormal to sleep over in the airport. So I decided to try spending a night in the airport for my first time ever! Tips on Sleeping in the Airport During an Overnight Layover My Story: I arrived at the Beijing airport on maybe 4-5 hours of sleep. I had only slept about 3-4 hours prior to my flight (I have sleep issues), and I only slept a max of 1 hour on the flight. So I was obviously exhausted. It took about 1 hour to pass through security for transfers (Beijing airport lines tend to be long). It was pretty tiring standing in line as I was feeling nauseous from the lack of sleep. I had to find a place to rest! I learned there were sleeping pods in the airport so I took a look. They had one, and it wasn’t taken. So I tried to sleep in this: I ended up being unable to because I kept worrying about how […]

How to Spend an Overnight Layover in Denver, Colorado

by Sharon @ Me Want Travel

In September I traveled around the US for about 2 weeks. I initially purchased a flight to visit my friend in Austin, Texas but found that the flight included a one night layover in Denver. In the end I thought it would actually be kind of cool to spend a night in a new state (I had never visited Colorado before). I had no idea what to expect as the only thing I knew about Colorado was that it was one of the first states to legalize recreational marijuana… I got into Denver quite late, unfortunately, arriving to the AirBnB around 5-6 PM. My flight was also early the next day, so I only had maybe 4-5 hours to explore the city. The host was nice enough to give me a ride to downtown Denver. How to Spend an Overnight Layover in Denver, Colorado 16th Street Mall My host dropped me off at the 16th Street Mall, which is actually a one-mile long street of restaurants and stores. They have a free shuttle that you can take up and down the street. Here’s a picture I took of a drunk girl riding it… Poke at Menya Noodle Bar I decided […]

Chiang Mai, Thailand Cooking Class (Mama Noi Cookery School)

by Sharon @ Me Want Travel

I am currently back in Chiang Mai, Thailand (for about 2-3 months)! I’ve been doing some slow travel lately. My friends from Taiwan visited for a few days, so we decided to take a Chang Mai, Thailand cooking class. They told me they booked with Mama Noi Cookery School, so I booked online as well to join them. Chiang Mai, Thailand Cooking Class (Mama Noi Cookery School) We booked the half day evening course from 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM for 800 baht (about $24.58 USD). This included the creation of a soup, a stir fried meal, curry dish, and a thai tea. Market + Exploration We started the day getting picked up at our studio apartment heading to the market. Our host showed us some of the ingredients we were going to be using. It was pretty cool checking out the Thailand local foods. The Thai lemon basil was our favorite! I thought we would get to pick out our ingredients for our meals at the market, but this was not included in the evening class. We then headed to the actual cooking school: And we played with puppies for the first 15 minutes hahaha they were soooo cute: The […]

Cost of Living in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam (Spending Report)

by Sharon @ Vietnam – Me Want Travel

I went to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam in March and had an awesome time! It was my first visit to this country, making it my 28th country to-date. I found costs were similar to those of Chiang Mai, Thailand – perhaps a little more expensive, but I still ended up spending less than $1,000 for the month while eating out and enjoying myself every day! Without further ado, here is my spending report: Cost of Living in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam (Spending Report) Things to Note The 32 days Vietnam spending report includes a 3-day vacation to Hoi An. 22,000 VND equals $1 USD You can easily get food around $1-3 (30,000-60,000 VND). I ended up going to a lot of places with meals for around $5-7 each (100,000-150,000 VND+). Movies are really cheap here so I loved going to theaters by myself! For transportation, you can select “Uber Moto” on the Uber app to hitch rides behind a scooter/motorcycle! I found the whole scooter mode of transportation a bit scary in Vietnam especially when you’re the pedestrian needing to cross the streets. But I ended up getting used to using Uber Moto and found it quite convenient. It was only around $1-3 […]

by Sharon @ Me Want Travel

Although suitcases have taken over the traveling world for many years, backpacks are increasing in popularity with the rise in world travelers and backpacker culture. It could be argued that backpacks are even more convenient than carrying a suitcase. Perhaps it is the fact that backpacks allow more freedom and ease of travel when getting through airports, going up or down stairs, or crossing busy streets with rocky pavement. Purchasing a new travel backpack should be seen as an investment, as you should be choosing a quality pack that will do its job without too much wear and tear. That doesn’t mean that you need to blow your savings (that could be used for travel) when there are plenty of affordable backpacks out there! Many backpacks are also carry-on friendly to cut down on extra travel costs. But with so many options you may be wondering what some of the main features to look for are. How to Plan your Southeast Asia Trip (2015)

by Heesun @ Vietnam – Me Want Travel

After traveling to Europe, next on my bucket list was the magical kingdom of Southeast Asia. Friends would come back from their backpacking trip or study abroad trip and wax poetic on how “lifechanging” and “amazing” it was. After hearing the abundance of testimonies, I knew I would have to experience Southeast Asia for myself. So one of my buddies from college, Tess, and I started planning. We both finished our academic responsibilities in May and we both had a hard stop of June 1 to return to real life. This gave us about three weeks to explore a set of countries that we could have easily spent six months in. After much deliberation, we decided to visit Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand. Here is the final specific itinerary we came up with and hopefully it can shed some light on how to plan your Southeast Asia trip! Three Week Southeast Asia Itinerary Day Date Location Friday 5/08/15 N/A Saturday 5/09/15 Hong Kong Sunday 5/10/15 Hong Kong Monday 5/11/15 Hong Kong Tuesday 5/12/15 Hanoi (Vietnam) Wednesday 5/13/15 Hanoi (Vietnam) Thursday 5/14/15 Ha Long Bay (Vietnam) Friday 5/15/15 Hoi An (Vietnam) Saturday 5/16/15 Hoi An (Vietnam) Sunday 5/17/15 Ho Chi Minh […]

Mexico City is a beautiful place and is having a bit of a moment with all the travel blogger hype. If you’re a fan of architecture and/or design, you will love Mexico City with its brightly colored homes, courtyards, and greenery. If you don’t, you can directly complain to me or blame it on me. How to Plan Your 2 Week US Trip – USA States Trip Itinerary and Spending Report

by Sharon @ Me Want Travel

In September I took a quick US trip for about 2 weeks. Because I didn’t have anyone to road trip with, I decided to take flights use budget airlines to fly super affordably. How to Plan Your 2 Week US Trip My itinerary looked like this: Sept 6 – Denver, Colorado (overnight layover) Sept 7-11 – Austin, Texas Sept 11-14 – Chicago, Illinois Sept 14-16 – Minneapolis, Minnesota Sept 16-19 – Los Angeles, California Everyone asked me why I went to Minneapolis saying it was random. But I believe there is beauty in every location, however remote and ‘unpopular’ it may be :)! Minnehaha Falls, Minneapolis I ended up flying with Spirit and Frontier airlines. They aren’t the highest rated, but they are affordable and get the job done. The biggest thing to note is that if you don’t want to pay extra fees, you can only carry a personal item instead of a carry-on suitcase or check-in bag. This limitation actually ended up working well for me cause it made it easier to travel with, especially when I was trying to find my way to and from airports. Cost of Travel – Transportation and Accommodations Transportation: Flights + Bus (Frontier […]

Discover the Best Things to See in Vietnam

by Heesun @ Vietnam – Me Want Travel

Vietnam stole my heart. Its chaos, the inherent friendliness and pride found in its people, the complex sweet, sour, salty, and spicy flavors of its food left me wanting to stay far longer than the short time I had. Based on my experiences there, these are the best things to see in Vietnam: 7. Ha Long Bay Cruise (Halong Bay, Vietnam)  Ha Long Bay is in northeast Vietnam and is known for its countless limestone formations, or karsts, that dot the bay. Most people explore the bay through single day or multi-day cruises on junk boats. After some Trip Advisor research, we booked a cruise through Pelican Cruise. The rooms were nicely furnished and my friend and I joked that one day, we would be able to think of this as “normal”. For now though, we were super excited about how plush the bed was and how cool it was that we had our own shower in our room. The cruise also offered kayaking, tai chi with the sunrise, cave excursions and had a sundeck bar where you could buy 2 for 1 drinks until 7:30 pm. You also visit a fishing village and meet the fisherwomen, who take you for a ride through the bay […]

5 Greek Temples You Can’t Miss

Temple Hopping in Greece Aside from its undeniable rich history and fascinating culture, Greece is internationally known for its trademark architecture. Among their many world-renowned landmarks, the Hellenic Republic’s beautiful temples still stand as not only one of the country’s main tourist attractions, but also as a reminder that Greece is one of the oldest and most durable civilizations that has ever existed. In this article we will take a look at five of the most recognizable Greek temples that you should visit if you happen to travel to Greece Temple of Olympian Zeus Ancient History highlights that the Temple of Zeus is one of the largest temples ever built in ancient history thanks to its ambitious layout and distinctively tall columns. Such was the ambition of the temple that it took 700 hundred years to be completed. During its heyday, the temple featured numerous gigantic statues of Zeus made out of gold and chryselephantine. As Athens is likely to be the first stop for any visitor to Greece, the Temple of Olympian Zeus is the best place to start your temple hopping. You can see more on what to do in Athens here. 5 Awesome Places to Drink Beer in SF

Whether it’s just to kick one back with your homies or to try new flavors, this list has got something for you. 5 Awesome Places to Drink Beer in SF 1. Biergarten (Hayes Valley, SF) – Perfect for sunny summer days (be sure to still bring a jacket though, for no other reason than this is SF) and with a group of friends, Biergarten always delivers. There are always a few tasty beers on tap, as well as wine and non-alcoholic options. They also feature a smattering of small plates so you can nosh as you drink those steins. Prost! 424 Octavia St, San Francisco, CA 94102 2. Mission Bar (Mission, SF) – If you’re a fan of dive bars, this place is the bee’s knees. They offer cheap beer, have a pool table, booths that you can lose yourself in conversation in, and are cash only. I […]

7 Reasons Iceland Should Be Your Next Travel Destination

by Heesun @ Me Want Travel

Iceland is a gorgeous country and has been receiving its fair share of hype due to social media. I went in March 2016 and it was 100% worth it, even though it was cold AF (I’m not going to lie to you). Here are 7 reasons why Iceland should be your next travel destination. 7 Reasons Why Iceland Should Be Your Next Travel Destination 1. Waterfalls – Waterfalls are EVERYWHERE in Iceland. Double rainbows on the regular – With its random rains, seeing double rainbows in Iceland is a pretty regular magical occurrence. And being in Iceland, you have the added benefit of a dope […]
