My Motorbike Is Not For Sale…YET! (Part 9 – Mama Ti’s, Sa Pa)

by Jeremy Heil @ Travel Blog with photos of my adventures! - No Regrets Traveler

The next morning, I got in contact with Mama Ti who lives in one of the villages just outside of Sa Pa.  She had room for me to come stay with her and her family.  She is 56 years old and the grandmother to 16 children. She had room for me to come stay with her and her family.  It was a 60+ minute drive in the pouring rain down terrible bumpy and rocky roads that are falling apart. The other option is to hike about 4-5 hours with one of Mama Ti's daughters to the village if you don't have a motorcycle.  Mama Ti is the unassigned matriarch Queen of the village by my opinion. She learned English by selling jewelry and textiles to tourists visiting Sa Pa.

We were pulled over for no other reason than the color of our skin. The cops pulled us over because based on the color of our skin the odds were stacked in their favor that we didn’t have proper identification to drive a motorcycle in Vietnam. In some areas of the world people would scream that this is a form of racism. I think a better term would be “capitalistic cultural selection.”  Without the proper identification, it meant we would be subject to a fine.  The cops were not wrong, neither one of us had a valid International motorcycle license.

Our last 30km were spent in the pitch black with pouring rain, heavy winds, lightning, and thunder.  The road was sketchy, but the consensus was we had to go on because there was no shelter for us to stop at. “Slow and steady” wins the race became our motto.  If we hit a pothole we couldn’t see then the only choice was to hold on and hope we didn’t end up face planting into the road. Or worse go flying off a cliff to a movie worthy death.

Teach, Travel, Budget, Financial Responsibility

Teach, Travel, Budget, Financial Responsibility

by Jeremy Heil @ Travel Blog with photos of my adventures! - No Regrets Traveler

Teach, Travel, Budget, Financial Responsibility

It has been over four months since I retired from my comfortable job at 3M to pursue my dream of living abroad.  I completed an in-class 150 hour TESOL course at AVSE to receive a certification to teach English to speakers of another language.  I then spent two months touring around Vietnam on a motorcycle and wrote a 14-part blog series (some parts yet to be released) that I hope one day to have published as a book.

I’m currently residing in Da Nang, Vietnam applying for English teaching positions.  The stock market has been on fire since “the Donald” took office, but not enough for me to live off my investments forever.  My blog and/or photography career haven’t hit the “influencer” status yet, which means my piggy bank is thinning out as I do not have an income.  And we all know bacon wouldn’t be tasty if it wasn’t fat. Translation: fat pig = tasty bacon or fat piggy bank = travel without watching my bank account just go down.

I’m not exactly hurting for money right now. However, there are times when I wish I could just spend my money down to the last dime and not worry about it. I admire people who have the ability to spend their last dollar and then figure it out from there as long as they don't have to beg or steal to survive. As much as I love taking risks and going “against the grain,” I can’t just spend, spend, spend.  I constantly think how awful I would feel if I had to financially burden my family, friends or community when I’m perfectly capable of earning money.  I could survive for quite a long time over here without working if I wanted to because of how I saved.  I just prefer not to watch my money decline month after month when I have the ability to earn and travel.

I am finding English teaching pay ranges from $14-15 an hour in Da Nang. This is on the lower side when compared to Hanoi or Saigon, which is a bummer because the cost of living is similar.  I plan to work 15-25 hours a week to reserve time to work on my writing, website and photography. I’m scheduled for 8 hours a week right now and if I lived minimally I could cover all of my Vietnamese living expenses.  Imagine working 8 hours a week and covering all of your expenses for a month!

If I make $15/hr and work for 25 hours a week then I should be able to haul in $1500 a month.  I plan to negotiate my rate after the 20-hour probationary period. My skills warrant more than rookie level pay.  For now, I must take what I can get to prove myself.  Financially, I don’t need more money than I have in the bank to live and travel for a substantial amount of time.  Mentally, my psyche needs it because of how I was raised. I must feed my psyche or it’s going to be a lean bacon psyche and lean bacon psyche doesn’t taste good.

My room rent is $245 a month. This includes internet, cable, trash, utilities, shared kitchen, a fantastic view, mini-fridge in my room, private bathroom, maid service twice a week, and air conditioning.  My other monthly costs include $15 for my cell phone, $35 for traveler’s health insurance, $300 budget for food and entertainment, and $50 for what can be defined scientifically as “other shit!”  My total monthly cost to live in Vietnam should be around $625.

Based on my math I should be able to save $500-$900 every four weeks and replenish my piggy bank to the level I started this adventure in 3-4 months’ time if I book 15-25 hours a week.  That doesn’t take into account extra costs that will inevitably come up.  For example, I can’t stay in Da Nang for four months without traveling and keep my sanity.  My soul needs to get out and see new places. But for now, I’m planning to base myself out of Da Nang for a few months to work on my blog, teach and figure out my next big steps.

And that my friends is how I am budgeting my financial responsibilities to travel and live outside of the United States.  If you have any questions or would like to know anything else on this topic just let me know as I would be very happy to help you do something similar if it interests you.

Holidays Abroad and Hiking a Volcano

Holidays Abroad and Hiking a Volcano

by Jeremy Heil @ Travel Blog with photos of my adventures! - No Regrets Traveler

During our Christmas Day brunch bonanza a couple of us Tehila House residents decided that we should take a little adventure before the new year came rolling in.  We committed to waking up at 2:00 in the morning to go hike to the top of the Mount Batur volcano to watch the sun rise over Bali.  We all know anytime you plan for a 2:00am wake-up call there is almost zero chance of falling asleep early and getting a few good hours of shuteye.  It was inevitable I was going to sleep like crap and wake up feeling unrested.

LetBet – Preparing for a new future :: SBC News

by noreply@blogger.com (Bill Healey) @ WE Travel, Leisure & Lifestyle

from SBC NEWS
15 January 2018

Bill Healey – LetBet – Preparing for a new future

SBC: Hi Bill, can you begin by introducing LetBet as a company and describing what it is you do?

Blockchain-based online gambling platform LetBet is the latest company to tap into the hype surrounding cryptocurrency, as it takes the first steps to unveil its own digital currency, entitled LBT. The new currency has been touted as a solution to the delayed payout systems of traditional gambling sites, as well as a way to remove the third party element, and we caught up with the firm’s Business Development Manager Bill Healey to find out more.

Bill Healey: LetBet is aiming to be a revolutionary leader in the online gambling industry by overcoming issues such as delays, unfair payout systems and the innate trust players place in potentially corrupt third parties. Our gambling options consist of sports betting, online poker, casino games, online bingo and online lottery.

LetBet’s development is not limited to our internal development team – we eagerly share and cooperate with third-party developers allowing LetBet to quickly create a decentralised platform that removes fees typically paid to a systems administrator. In this structure, each contributor receives LBT as reward.

SBC: A number of cryptocurrencies focused towards the betting industry have emerged recently, and this market is becoming increasingly saturated. What puts LetBet apart from its competitors?

BH: Most of our competitors are working on an Ethereum platform (ERC20 token) which we don’t consider to be a good platform for online gambling. There are two important points:

  1. Speed: Ethereum average blocktime is one minute, which would be a long wait for most people;
  2. Fair Gaming: Currently Ethereum doesn’t provide a truly Random Number Generator (RNG) making it difficult for our competitors to provide fair game. Additionally, our competitors provide the game and also work as the bookmaker – we are not. LetBet is making the online gambling platform. We will work with other traditional online gambling sites to switch them from traditional centralised system to our decentralised blockchain-based system.

SBC: LBT’s initial coin offering will commence in late-February. Where do you aim to be by the end of 2018?

BH: We have a few milestones set for 2018:
  • February: ICO Start. SportBet Pre-Match Launch
  • March: ICO Ends. Slot Machine Launch
  • April: Internal Exchange. Jackpot Slot Machine Launch
  • May: Mobile Wallet. Roulette Launch
  • June: Go-to- Market Exchange. Get 3 potential bookmakers to provide game at UK
  • July: SportBet Update. Tennis and Basketball
  • August: Third Platform Launch. Get another two potential bookmakers to provide game at Singapore
  • September: Poker Launch. SportBet In-Play Bet Launch
  • Fourth Quarter: P2P SportBet, Live Casino and Wallet Cold Storage Support
  • LetBet is focused on continued enhancement and development throughout the year, to ensure a mature platform for it’s bookmakers, players and partners.
SBC: LetBet has talked a tough game, asserting that it will “revolutionise the online gambling industry” and “bring the industry to a new future in the next few months”. With that in mind, what are your long-term plans?

BH: Our vision is to continue growing internationally through our platform. We aim to be a leader in the industry, increasing our number of bookmakers and players from around the world, and to continue offering a growing number of online games through our partners.

My Motorbike Is Not For Sale...YET! (Part 5 - Nha Trang, Tuy Hoa & Binh Dinh)

by Jeremy Heil @ Travel Blog with photos of my adventures! - No Regrets Traveler

Unfortunately, we came across some sand in the road.  My front tire was getting yanked down again and Trang was preparing for another crash. I learned from my first experience, hit the gas and wobbly drove my way out of it without getting buried in the road bunker (#golfreference).  We made it to the hotel in Ninh Binh just as it was getting dark.

by Jeremy Heil @ Travel Blog with photos of my adventures! - No Regrets Traveler

We started of this morning taking the scenic route and met a man in a small farming village who was black out drunk before 10am.  He was having a conversation in Vietnamese with Chris and I that we couldn't understand one word of before eventually writing something on his own hand.  He handed the pen back to me so I took it that he wanted my autograph (Autograph Video).  We said our goodbyes, but not without issue.  The friendliest drunk decided he needed to give Chris a mouth to mouth goodbye kiss as he got back on his bike!

At this point, I got really into my drive and didn't stop to take pictures as I was concentrated on zooming downhill and around the corners.  I kept thinking about how my mom would have yelled at me to slow down if she saw what I was doing, but sometimes I just like to grab the bull by the horns and take risks.  Sorry mom!
