2018 is the Year of “I Can”
by Marjorie Gavan @ coffeehan
Sat Jan 13 10:41:54 PST 2018
I get epiphanies at an inopportune time in the most inconvenient of places. Like when I am about to sleep, or when I’m in the toilet. The latest one came to me a few days ago while on a motorbike, traveling my way home. I covered myself with a shawl because the sun bore down on us and it felt like I was getting a tan against my will. The idea that came to me, it’s this, 2018 is the year for “I can.” Let me expound. I think there has been a going-on theme for each of my year; 2017 is when I stopped asking for easy, 2016 is all for building belief that dreams are possible, and 2015 is about self-healing. I was depressed for most of my life that I truly believed I would never recover. I treated this mental condition as a home and I owned it. It’s weird to say, but it’s true, I was comfortable with my misery that it made me arrogant. People would offer help and I’d scoff at their “lack of understanding”. I didn’t think I could be helped, I didn’t think I could get over it, I thought I’d have to carry […]

She asked me how was my trip, and before I could answer, she told me that I looked so beautiful without makeup. “I’m not lying, I’m a frank person. You are so beautiful, your face looks fresh and you got an amazing skin. Why do you even wear makeup?!” she said. I didn’t tell her this, but I’m not too happy with my face without makeup. My lips are too thin, my face drained of color, my lashes are too short, and my eyebrows undefined. Yes, I am just like other women who are hard on themselves when it comes to their looks. Hence, I was never comfortable going out without makeup. It makes me feel like I am naked and unpretty, and it doesn’t help that most people would ask me if I am sick. I […]

Solo island hopping in Siargao is not as fun as I thought
by Marjorie Gavan @ coffeehan

Someone’s at the door, struggling to open it. It’s not easy turning the knob. I remember what Monique, one of the resort’s staff, told me earlier when she led me to this room, “You got to keep turning the key to the right, one of the guests told me the trick.” And so I was there silently cheering the person on, You can do it. The door finally opened, a light-haired white woman entered the room. She was the same girl who greeted me earlier, we’re sharing the 4-bed mixed room at Bravo Beach Resort. All beds are occupied but I’ve yet to see the other 3 guests. They’re probably out exploring Siargao, which could mean 2 things; they’re either surfing or island hopping. The girl looked up at me; I was on the upper bunk, “Why are you staying in this room? You should check out Siargao!“ I couldn’t place her accent, but I could tell she didn’t come from an English speaking country. I was supposed to say that I don’t know where to go, instead, I answered, “I think it’s raining. ” She shook her head, “No it isn’t. It’s sunny. Go out and explore,” she said in […]

Technically speaking, I went to Malaysia three times
by Marjorie Gavan @ coffeehan
Mon Nov 06 23:20:25 PST 2017
How many people can say they’ve gone to another country three times in a matter of days? Well, it happened to me, and the country in question is Malaysia. First I went to Penang, then when I was in Singapore, my friend and I, with her husband, crossed borders to Malaysia, and lastly, I went back to Kuala Lumpur for the transit to Manila. This whole trip started in Penang where I explored the George Town street art on foot, visited one of the Chinese water villages, the Chew Jetty, chased after cats inside the Purrfect Cat Museum, checked out vintage cameras at the Camera Museum, then ended the trip on a sweet note with a chance meeting with a Catalan painter. Crossing border from Singapore Then I flew to Singapore and spent the next 3 days exploring the Lion City. In one of those days, my friend told me that we’d be going to Malaysia for a Thai massage. I kid you not, we went to another country just to get a massage and it happened to be the eve of my birthday. My friend’s husband took the wheel, we drove for god knows how many hours (I napped), […]

Travel Recap for 2017
by Marjorie Gavan @ coffeehan
Wed Jan 03 17:05:36 PST 2018
Physically she was in the Philippines, mentally she was still in America. I used to listen to a friend recounts the life she left behind in the States. I would lend my ear everyday, even when she tends to repeat her stories. Before her, I never had such a burning desire to travel. In a way, she opened a gate to a world that both fascinated and tormented me. In my head, I told myself, “I want to travel,” to which my pessimistic self would reply, “you wish, traveling is expensive, you’re broke.” I am writing about this because even when I believed that pessimistic voice for a very long time, I was able to break free from its truth. I didn’t have an epiphany, it didn’t take a broken heart to make it happen. Just one day, I started traveling and continued doing it to this day. 2017 is the year I’ve had more trips than ever before. It wasn’t a goal, I didn’t have a number in mind, I just went whenever I could. And to start the New Year right on my blog, join me as I journeyed back in time to relive the memories of my […]

Kommentar zu Sihanoukville Reisetipps: Anreise, Strände, Essen und Unterkünfte von Patrick
by Patrick @ Kommentare für Trip Angkor
Mon Jan 15 03:37:39 PST 2018
Schaut Euch z.B. das <a href="https://tripangkor.com/hotels/?id=1156404" rel="noopener" target="_blank">White Sea Boutique Hotel</a>, <a href="https://tripangkor.com/hotels/?id=2193709" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Otres Resort</a>, <a href="https://tripangkor.com/hotels/?id=862097" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Ren Resort</a> oder <a href="https://tripangkor.com/hotels/?id=1113971" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Naia Resort</a> an. Alles nette Unterkünfte in Sihanoukville.

Crossing Border - Ho Chi Minh to Siem Reap – coffeehan
coffeehan
And the real solo traveling began. My accidental travel buddy in Vietnam has gone back to the Philippines while I continued my way to Cambodia. The morning of my departure, I tiptoed my way out of the room at Koniko Backpackers Hostel so as not to disturb my roommates. My bag was markedly heavy this time with all the stuff that I bought from Ho Chi Minh to take home with me; nothing too fancy, just a few pasalubong for my friends and family. There’s a man sleeping at the lobby and I was careful not to awaken him. But when I saw that the gate was closed, I was left with no choice. It was around 6 in the morning and Ho Chi Minh was slowly waking up from its own slumber. I stopped to ask some people along the way looking for the bus terminal of Mekong Express. I booked my ticket online for VND 528,471 (PHP 1,113 – USD 23), I just needed to be in the terminal to have my printed ticket validated. There are several buses parked along Phạm Ngũ Lão street so I searched for the Mekong bus. When I found it, the man standing …

Koh Trong Paradise Island
by CamboGuide @ Cambodia Travel Guide
Sat Oct 11 00:35:53 PDT 2014
Koh Trong is a beautiful quiet island opposite the riverfront of Kratie Town, an almighty sandbar in the middle of the river. No cars, but carts, smiling peasants, craggy fishermen and a rich soil that man turned into an orchard, Koh Trong is a small paradise. It is a short ferry ride between town life and a slice of Cambodia’s rural ways.
Surrounded 8 months a year by white sandy beaches, constantly refreshed by the river’s breeze, the island of Koh Trong is some sort of an ideal Cambodia. The beaches call out to be lazed upon with a picnic after a dip in the Mekong.

Kommentar zu Von Phnom Penh nach Sihanoukville von Patrick
by Patrick @ Kommentare für Trip Angkor
Wed Jan 17 08:32:54 PST 2018

Bravo Beach Resort is where you should stay in Siargao
by Marjorie Gavan @ coffeehan
Fri Dec 08 00:24:52 PST 2017
I touched down Siargao from Cebu at around 8 in the morning. I was greeted by the shuttle drivers outside the airport, all vying for my attention, not because I’m such a goddess but because they want me to pick their van transfer service. The airport is 29-km away from General Luna where my place of accommodation is, a transportation service is a must. But I booked my transfer prior to this trip, I just had to look for a certain guy named, Burdoy. I asked the drivers if they knew him and they sure did. Moments later, I saw this old short guy from a distance donned in a barong shirt. He is dark skinned, his hair is brushed neatly, and he was carrying a placard that bears two names; one is mine. “Ayun driver ni Burdoy, si Binay.” (There goes Burdoy’s driver, Binay) The old man is not Burdoy but his driver. I didn’t get his name, but because he does share an uncanny resemblance to the former vice president, let’s just call him Binay. Binay offered to carry monster for me. I got in the van and waited for the other passengers to arrive. All in all, there […]

I climbed Mt. Manabu for coffee
by Marjorie Gavan @ coffeehan
Tue Nov 28 00:04:29 PST 2017
I sometimes climb mountains for reasons other than conquering them; to be tattooed by the legendary Apo Whang in Kalinga, to plant a tree in Bulacan, to be the unwilling model for a postcard in Romblon, to see the beautiful amphitheatre rice terraces in Batad. Adding to that list is a climb for coffee. That’s right folks, I climbed Mt. Manabu in Batangas for the promise of free, hot civet coffee, as recommended by a friend. I found the idea enticing enough to gather my friends and take the hike. Did I say friends? Scratch that. Only one friend managed to stay true to his word. That’s right, the other friends bailed on me a day before this trip. As if that’s not bad enough, I wouldn’t even know that they weren’t going had I not asked. Really, how difficult is it to take the initiative to inform the organizer that they are not coming? I’m sorry, I don’t want to begin this article on a bad note, but I want them to know it’s not okay. I wish they could have given me a little courtesy. How to get to Mt. Manabu? Anyhoo, let’s go back to the trip […]

1000 Dank!!!! Mt. Ulap changed my feelings about mountain climbing
by Marjorie Gavan @ coffeehan
Thu Jan 18 07:48:56 PST 2018
It was a trip that almost didn’t happen for me because I was late. You see, sometimes, I don’t know how to say no. On the evening of my trip to Benguet, I said yes to a friend when she asked to see me. I should have said no, then I wouldn’t be so late during the assembly for the Mt. Ulap climb. Now that I mentioned it, I am now going to say no to some things especially if they are going to conflict with a plan. Anyhoo, so there I was late on a motorbike, gripping the driver’s shoulders so he would drive faster. My phone rang a few times, the organizer was trying to find out where the hoot I was. It was a Friday night, the traffic was horrible, getting an Uber was like me getting a boyfriend, nil. Hence, the habal-habal, which by the way, is now illegal, no thanks to LTFRB. I’m not gonna share how I managed to get a motorbike though. I’m not sure how late I was (probably an hour) so even when I wanted to pee, I decided against it when I reached the meeting place, a McDonalds somewhere in Ortigas. […]

Travel Guide – George Town, Penang, Malaysia
by Marjorie Gavan @ coffeehan
Wed Oct 25 01:20:42 PDT 2017
It looked just like the Philippines, a little bit like Vigan. I told my friend that I was not impressed, not that it was not a beautiful place, just that it’s hard for me to appreciate a nation that is geographically similar to my country. When I leave my side of the world, I want to be amazed, I want to be curious, and see something different. I know though that despite the many similarities, Malaysia is not the Philippines. And so I tried my best to get to know it in the little time that I had. If you too are planning to go to Penang but only have a short time to spare, here’s a travel guide to George Town. Where is George Town George Town is the capital city of Penang in Malaysia and that was once among the British settlements in Southeast Asia. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its architectural and cultural townscape. All over the city, you will see pre-war buildings, perfectly melding in the modern times. Where to stay in George Town – House of Journey Hostel & Guesthouse
by Marjorie Gavan @ coffeehan
Fri Oct 20 01:22:02 PDT 2017
My suitcase is small, but it was no fun pulling it along for 750 meters to get to my hostel. I had an option to take a bus, but it only takes a 10-minute walk from the jetty so I figured I should just go on foot. What I didn’t anticipate is how hard it would when you have a suitcase in tow. And so there I was grunting, pulling, lifting my suitcase over uneven surfaces, all the while looking at my map to make sure I was heading in the right direction. I walked the length of Chulia street trying to find Hong Ping Hotel. Behind this hotel, is where you can find the House of Journey hostel & guesthouse. House of Journey sits in an old heritage structure built in the 1850s. It is not as I was early for my check-in, thus, I went for a quick shower, left my bag in the lobby, and started exploring George Town. I returned sometime in the afternoon, completed my payment for my 3D2N stay, then followed one of the staff as he led me to the 6-bed dorm room. The rate per head is MYR 40 ($9.40 – ₱483.58) per […]

The one thing you should never miss in Siargao is Magpupungko Rock Pool
by Marjorie Gavan @ coffeehan
Wed Dec 20 17:08:06 PST 2017
I texted Doy first thing in the morning that I would be having a land tour with Bobby that day. I’d finished my breakfast but he still hasn’t replied; I assumed he’s out riding the waves again just like the day before. I got bored and hailed a motorbike to Pensangan Surf, which turned out to be unneeded because Pensangan is a mere 5-minute walk from Bravo Beach Resort. I greeted Doy’s mother as soon as I entered their store and I told her I was looking for Bobby. Bobby is just a middleman, he contacted his cousin to take me to Magpupungko. [Read: Solo island hopping in Siargao is not as fun as I thought] Doy’s mother was trying to explain something to me in Bisaya and I looked at her like she was speaking in Klingon. My grandfather from the mother’s side is Waray, my father’s family hailed from Pangasinan, but my siblings and I are Tagalog, having been born and raised in Manila. I can catch a few Bisaya words and based on my […]

As quickly as the sale season started, I was down to my last Malindo Business Class ticket for my trip back to Singapore. Having enjoyed the premiums, I’m probably going to miss the convenience and experience of high-flying. Hopefully I don’t get used to this though, or else my wallet will cry. Should the elephants living at the Mondulkiri Project’s elephant sanctuary be classified as Captive Elephants or Domesticated Elephants? The capture and taming of elephants began in the Indus Valley more than 4,000 years ago and people have continued to capture, train and work them since that time.
